who’s who
Planarian Man is a half human/half planarian person who spends his time fighting crime.
He was created when a young boy accidentaly cut off the end of his finger while cutting up planaria in a biology experiment. In a freak chain of events, a previously-cut planarian attached itself to the exposed area of the finger (the source of this planarian’s extraordinary ability would be explained much later), permanently attaching itself.Over the years, his body slowly, yet steadily, changed into a complex mixture of a human and a planarian.
Although he started out as an animal-themed security guard at a zoo, Planarian Man was thrust into the superhero career after the murder of The Quagga. He was forced to fight police and renegade clones to clear his name.
Planarian Man went on to fight the good fight against crime and evil, leading his band of planarian clones (and a benevolent midget; see “The Russian Midget” below) against evil clones and other threats to the general public’s health and well-being.
The Mad Dr. Planarian is Planarian Man’s arch enemy.
He was the first clone made of Planarian Man. Planarian Man’s mental anguish had been revealed as the personality of the Mad Dr. Planarian growing inside Planarian Man’s head, just waiting to get out. When he did get out, he began a streak of terror that was so devastating Planarian Man nearly died stopping it, and several others have not been so lucky.
The Mad Dr. Planarian has since become the classic super villain, staying in hiding until he has a new sinister plan to unleash. Not all of his plans have worked, but enough have that his presence can never be forgotten.
His true motivations, however, will play a significant role in future planarian eras.
The Masked Planarian was an early clone of Planarian Man, created during Planarian Man’s first year as a superhero.
He has two origins, one from the Planarian Man comic, another from Planarian Man: The Movie. The comic version is generally accepted as the “official” origin.
Like the Mad Dr. Planarian, he demonstrated the planarian’s ability to store memories chemically when he discovered the location of Planarian Man’s secret headquarters immediately after being “born.” Each planarian person has the memories of its parent planarian up until the point of creation. This can be both an asset and a liability, depending on the personality of the new clone.
After being “formed,” the Masked Planarian was trained by The Quagga, the revived vigilante and former coworker of Planarian Man.
The Human Planarian was one of the earliest clones to come from Planarian Man and the second “good guy.”
After Planarian Man and the Masked Planarian’s battle against The Mad Dr. Planarian and The Geezers, this new clone was found by elderly superhero Granddaddy Longlegs. Grandaddy took him under his wing and taught him many valuable lessons and skills gained over decades of superhero experience. He learned the art of disguise, how to handle himself on the streets of the city, and how old guys pick up young girls.
As Granddaddy Longlegs took him under his wing, he decided to carry on the tradition. Instead of a human dressing up like a spider like Granddaddy Longlegs did, he decided to be a planarian dressing up like a human, thus the Human Planarian was born.
The Russian Midget is the only non-planarian person to ever be on the Planarian Patrol.
Planarian Man met the Russian Midget through the Zygodactyl Zany, a superhero that Planarian Man worked with in the early days. The Russian Midget was the Zygodactyl Zany’s European cousin.
After the Planarian Patrol fragmented at the end of issue #1, The Russian Midget helped found and lead the Planarian Patrol International. Following the break-up of the homeland Planarian Patrol and Planarian Man’s subsequent retirement from superhero activity, he helped Planarian Man, Dan and Innocent, and the various time-travelling planaria defeat the F.E.R.P.O.s from the future.
Estro Jenn, along with the Zygodactyl Zany, was a member of Planarian Man’s first team of superheroes.
Motivated by her mother’s disgust over her daughter’s love of sports and the outdoors, Jenn entered the halls of science to create an antidote to the tomboyism her mother so despised. When two crooks broke into the lab and accidentally spilled the cure on her, her body was overwhelmed and developed a resistance to the substance.
Her life’s work foiled, she took up the fight against aggression and over-masculinity with the synthetic estrogen that she developed and loaded into darts. These darts would end up playing a crucial role in Planarian Man’s early adventures and their battle with the Savage Planarian.
After wrapping up her short-lived superhero career, Jenn returned to the lab to continue her work.
The Quagga was Planarian Man’s first ally.
Initially a college roommate of Planarian Man, the Quagga encouraged Planarian Man to come work with him at the local zoo as an animal-themed security guard.
His apparent murder, and the ensuing drama and investigation, led to Planarian Man’s transition from zoo security guard to superhero. He was later resurrected and possessed by the spirit of the Quagga, and is now a supernatural creature.
He was responsible for taking the Masked Planarian under his wing and training him. To this day, the content and extent of the Masked Planarian’s training is not fully known; new tricks informed by The Quagga’s visit to the afterlife pop up when least expected, as does The Quagga himself.
Uranus Man is an alien coincidentally enough from the planet Uranus.
He lived in secrecy amongst earthlings for several decades before his supply of Uranoid (a chemical which allowed his body to become acclamated to our atmosphere and society by virtually making him human) became depleted.
After aiding the Planarian Patrol in their battle against Blueface the Pirate Planarian, he returned to his home planet.
